UNISON PRESS RELEASE – WORKERS MEMORIAL DAY 2020

UNISON RENFREWSHIRE COMMEMORATES THOSE WHO LOST THEIR LIVES AT WORK ON WORKERS MEMORIAL DAY 2020

International Workers’ Memorial Day (IWMD) on 28 April is our day to remember the dead and fight for the living.

This year’s commemoration takes on a new importance as we remember those who have sadly died delivering vital care and services during the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Although this year’s commemorations were limited by the ‘stay at home’ and ‘social distancing’ restrictions, UNISON Officers took part in a wreath laying event at Renfrew’s Workers Memorial and at Paisley’s Workers Memorial outside Renfrewshire Council’s HQ Building.  Lorna Glover, UNISON Health & Safety Officer, gave a short speech on the importance of the yearly commemoration of those who have lost their lives at work, particularly during this difficult time.

Mark Ferguson, UNISON Renfrewshire Branch Secretary and Chair of UNISON Scotland’s Local Government Committee said:

“UNISON calls on all Employers to ensure that the appropriate PPE is provided for our members providing essential services in dangerous conditions.

Our members need to know they are working in conditions which are safe and healthy and they can feel confident in carrying our their duties with the adequate resources and correct protective equipment.

Carrying out vital services in our communities is the vocation of the vast majority of our members and this commitment should be fully recognised by employers who should be implementing safe practices at work to avoid unnecessary accidents or in the worst cases, deaths at work.”

Lorna Glover, UNISON Renfrewshire Branch Health & Safety Officer said:

“It was an honour to have led this years local Workers Memorial Day Event. This event was especially important this year given the current global pandemic. I urge everyone to follow the current lockdown measures, please stay safe fit and healthy – stay home”

***Can we ask that everyone places a candle in their window @ 9.00pm tonight to remember all those lives lost to COVID 19***

Thanks

Mark Ferguson
