Dear Colleague

Members may have seen reports in the media today about plans to re-open schools in Scotland.

UNISON alongside the teaching unions are engaged in discussions with the Scottish Government and COSLA as part of recovery plans for all education establishments.

We are currently awaiting further details to be announced by the First Minister and can   re-assure members that the trade unions will not sign off any re-opening until there is clear scientific/clinical evidence that it is safe to do so, this must include clear guidelines around Social Distancing and Personal Protective Equipment. We will also require that workplace, individual and generic COVID risk assessments to be carried out and agreed.

The guidelines already issued for education settings were solely for temporary hubs and not for the re-opening of schools.

The safety of our members is paramount and that of the people we serve. Any guidance issued will also require local discussions with our employers to take place.

I appreciate that you will be anxious given the media announcements, but rest assured that we raising all of your concernsat the highest level.

UNISON Scottish Education Issues Group have issued a survey for members in education. Please can you take some time to complete this survey which will be used in negotiations –  here is a link to the survey:

Members will be kept up to date with any developments. Please continue to stay safe, fit and healthy during these unprecedented times.
